Environmental Women in Action for Development (EWAD) with finding support from the Work No Child’s Business project (WNCB) and the Dutch government has handed over communication equipment to aid local communities in Busia district to end child labour.
They include 22 smart mobile phones and six Megaphones. These will strengthen the efforts of community mobilisers to rally local communities to do all humanly possible to progressively eliminate child labour in the Gold rich Busia district.
Due to heightened Gold mining activities, Busia district children have for long been prone to child labour. This compelled EWAD with funding support from the WNCB Uganda program to deploy different strategies towards ending this vice in Busia district.
According to Margaret Tuhumwire, the EWAD executive director these smart phones will ease communication and share positive community stories about ending child labour.
“Use them to collect data about child labor and also use the digital platforms therein like Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter among other social media platforms to create awareness about the dangers of child labor and encourage fellow adults to ensure that the children are in school not in the mines,” She explained.She added that Mega phones will be use to mobilize children to enroll, and stay in school as their option as opposed to involvement in any forms of child labour which are detrimental to their lives, and future.
The phones and Mega phones have been handed over during a stakeholder’s engagement in Busia by Busia district chief Administrative officer, witnessed by several key stakeholders from the private sector, business community, opinion leaders, miners, and other government officials.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Busia district deputy Chief Administrative officer Chadiha Ouma commended EWAD and the WNCB Uganda program for complementing the district leadership to development through empowering the young generation.
Since 2019 EWAD with support from WNCB has registered tangible achievements in the continuous efforts to end child labour in the world.
